Of all the holidays, Christmas is the one that is the most magical for children…and often the most stressful for adults. It seems like every year, the wish lists get longer and more expensive, the food prices go up, and the traditions get more extravagant.
Meanwhile, even when it’s not holiday time, our paychecks must stretch further. Some of us have suffered job losses, unexpected expenses, and a higher cost of living. The holiday season shouldn’t feel like a burden, but for many families, it brings almost as much anxiety as it does joy.
It doesn’t have to be like that.
Opt-out of the holiday insanity. Make simplicity your new mode of celebration. This 75-page PDF book, written by my then-teenage daughter and me, has more than a hundred tips for budgeting, decorating, family traditions, gift-giving, and charity, as well as recipes for delicious, festive, yet budget-friendly food.

I love this idea and I hope you sell a bunch of these. Basically all of the holidays have devolved/been pushed in the direction of thoughtless consumption, as the powers that be continue to squeeze all the money they can out of their “cattle.”
Meanwhile the holidays are stripped of meaning and the focus is on spending rather than closeness with family. I’ll bet everyone would be happier if the focus returned to connection and sharing with loved ones, and that’s the kind of thing “they” don’t want you to remember. So, a book like this is like a peaceful act of rebellion.
If I celebrated holidays, especially if I had a big family, I’d be all over this! It’s really just me and my spouse so we don’t have dinner parties or anything like that either, but it does remind me fondly of the past and how I made all my own decorations/cards and half my gifts.
Testing – I tried to post and my comment was eaten. Will post my real comment if this works.
