Vaseline is a staple in so many households in Canada and the US, and no wonder when it can be used for so many things. I recently started working in a restaurant, and my hands have been so dry from all the dishes and hand washing that I needed something that’d help more than just my lotion. So, I started putting Vaseline on my hands after work, and it’s made a huge difference.

It got me wondering what else it could be used for. With over 41 million units being sold in 2021 alone, there must be hundreds of uses.

What is Vaseline?

Vaseline is a brand name for petroleum jelly. Wikipedia explains:

Petroleum jellypetrolatumwhite petrolatumsoft paraffin, or multi-hydrocarbon, CAS number 8009-03-8, is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons (with carbon numbers mainly higher than 25), originally promoted as a topical ointment for its healing properties. Vaseline has been a well known American brand of petroleum jelly since 1870.

After petroleum jelly became a medicine-chest staple, consumers began to use it for cosmetic purposes and for many ailments including toenail fungus, genital rashes (non-STI), nosebleeds, diaper rash, and common colds. Its folkloric medicinal value as a “cure-all” has since been limited by better scientific understanding of appropriate and inappropriate uses. It is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an approved over-the-counter (OTC) skin protectant and remains widely used in cosmetic skin care, where it is often loosely referred to as mineral oil.

While many people use it without harm, there are some warnings about the use of Vaseline and similar products. Do your research before deciding whether or not this product is for you!

  1. I recently had a mole removed by my dermatologist. I was given several small envelopes of vasiline with instructions to put the vasiline on the wound twice a day to promote healing and prevent infection. It worked for that purpose and the site of the wound is gradually blending into the surrounding skin. I’ve used vasiline on my hands and feet to prevent drying, and I now have another use.

  2. While I strongly agree with using Vaseline as part of a fire starting kit, there is a how-not-to consideration worth mentioning. While Vaseline works well after being rubbed onto either a cotton ball or a round flat cotton cosmetic removal pad, both of those cotton items have several other uses — some of which smearing Vaseline onto them immediately removes some of those other options from your list of choices. One example could be using either cotton items after being moistened with a little water (before rubbing in a wee bit of Barkeeper’s Friend powder) to make an excellent surface rust remover from tools, mis-named stainless steel kitchen utensils (that were unwisely stored against something rusty), or other such rusting items.

Since either cotton balls or the more storable pads (backpackers take note) have multiple uses … it makes better sense to wait to apply Vaseline only once you’ve decided to use either cotton product for a fire starter. In contrast, smearing on some Vaseline days, weeks, or months ahead of any possible fire-starting need removes many of those other possible uses. So store or carry that Vaseline in its bottle separately from either cotton product until you have decided which use you’ve chosen for them and whether or not Vaseline is part of that decision.

  3. I like having vaseline around for various purposes and see no problem with using it. One warning though – the stuff leaks terribly so if you have it in a go-bag or pack, put it in a plastic bag or other impermeable container. That is especially true in heat!

  4. Only in the winter, when it’s really cold, I coat my face lightly w/Vaseline once a week before bed. I get up and wash it off. Saves my skin.

  5. I’ve had a couple of cats who loved to consume Vaseline as a hairball treatment.
As to sunburn treatment – just remember to *not* be out in the sun again too soon!
